What are we to think Mr Murdstone who turns up in Chapter two?
Clara Copperfield certainly likes him (or is it also because she needs him?)
The other Clara though (Peggotty) certainly does not like him. Another thought does she have a sixth sense or is there a little jealousy?
The only reason I suggest that is the lovely little conversation between David (who must be about 5 or 6 years old at least) and Peggotty when he brings up the topic of the frequent visits from the man with dark eyes and whiskers.
Poor Peggotty is quickly flustered when innocent David wants to know if she has ever been married and things get even darker when Murdstone pays that first visit, getting worse when he leaves and there is a distinct coldness between the two women and distinct loud words of disagreement between them which wakes up David
